Edwin M. (Tim) Johnston III

Founder
Co-Managing Partner

Edwin received his B.A. from Yale University in 1982 before earning his MBA from Boston University 1991 and graduating with highest honors. Edwin joined investment adviser and broker-dealer Harold C. Brown & Co. in 1995 as Senior Equity Analyst. He was then promoted to Director of Research in 1996 before being elevated to Vice President in 1998 and Portfolio Manager in 2000.

In 2004, Edwin founded Sandhill Investment Management in Buffalo, NY. Beginning as a small group of research professionals inspired by a common desire to create something better, Sandhill has since grown into a nationally recognized investment management firm with over $2 billion in assets under management as of March 2022. In his current role, Edwin serves as the firm's Co-Managing Partner while overseeing Sandhill's in-house equity and research team.

Active in the local Western New York community, Edwin currently serves as Dean (President) of the Saturn Club and co-chair of the Westminster Church capital campaign. He was a trustee of the Nichols School from 2008 to 2015—having taken the positions of vice chair and chair of the school's endowment. Edwin received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Nichols School in 2019. He has previously served on the board of the Elmwood Franklin School, Westminster Church, the Buffalo Tennis and Squash Club, and the Zoological Society of Buffalo.

Shant Goubrial

Co-Managing Partner
Chief Operating Officer

Shant earned a B.A. in Business Management from the Walsh College of Accountancy and Business in 2010. He joined Sandhill in 2011 and has primarily served the firm as Chief Operating Officer. As COO, Shant has been responsible for building and implementing all of the firm’s operating systems as well as IT infrastructure. His specialties include multiple Microsoft Office program certifications and automation data management.

Shant was nominated and previously served as a member of the TD Ameritrade Operations Panel. In 2022, he was named Co-Managing Partner at Sandhill, where he serves the firm by carrying out its strategic vision while overseeing all day-to-day operations.

Larry S. Stolzenburg

Partner, Head of Advisory Services

A 1978 graduate of Niagara University, Larry earned his B.B.A. in Accounting and graduated magna cum laude. He worked at Main Hurdman CPAs from 1978 to 1982 before founding Stolzenburg, Federspiel & Pfeifer, CPAs in 1983, where he worked as the firm's Managing Partner until 2003. Additionally, Larry founded Ellis Group, Inc, a business valuation firm, in 1996 and oversaw the firm until 2006.

Larry began managing client portfolios in 1994 and joined Sandhill in June 2008 as a Partner. He is licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in New York State and has served on the Board of Directors for Christian Central Academy and Bethanie Mission of Haiti.

Jonathan Amoia

Partner, Managing Director
Certified Private Wealth Advisor®

Since joining Sandhill in 2014, Jonathan’s passion has been identifying the challenges of high-net-worth individuals and families while developing customized strategies to address their unique set of circumstances. With a focus on entrepreneurial families, Jonathan takes a hands-on approach to craft business succession and transition plans, evaluate outside investment opportunities, and establish tax-aware multi-generational estate plans alongside legal and accounting teams. Additionally, he actively ensures that children and grandchildren are financially educated and understand the intended purpose of family assets. Jonathan is a Certified Private Wealth Advisor® designee, attained through the Yale School of Management, and was recognized on Forbes' Next-Gen Best-In-State Wealth Advisors list in 2019 and Forbes' Best-In-State Wealth Advisors list in 2021.

With 18 years of investment and financial services experience, Jonathan brings earned knowledge of entrepreneurship, private equity, venture capital, and investment banking to each client relationship. Prior to joining Sandhill, Jonathan served as Vice President within Citigroup’s investment bank. At Citi, Jonathan had trading coverage responsibilities for 60 institutional clients totaling over one trillion dollars of investable assets. Jonathan has also built, bought, and sold closely-held businesses, along with spending time in private equity and venture capital.

Jonathan earned an MBA from The William E. Simon Graduate School of Business at the University of Rochester, and a B.S. from SUNY New Paltz, where he graduated with honors and served as Student Body President.

Jonathan currently serves as a Board Member of The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, The BISON Children’s Scholarship Fund, and The Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Christopher Kicinski, CPA, CFP®

Partner, Investment Advisor

Chris graduated magna cum laude from SUNY Buffalo in 2003 with degrees in Accounting and Finance. Chris began his career at Lumsden & McCormick, LLP, a regional accounting firm, where he serviced both tax and audit clients in industries such as manufacturing, service, medical and not-for-profit. In 2007, he joined Lumsden & McCormick Financial Services, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the CPA firm, where he was responsible for both individual clients and qualified retirement plans. During this time, Chris earned both his CPA license and CFP® Certification.

Chris joined Sandhill as Vice President in 2011 and was named Partner in 2016. Along with managing assets of individual clients, families, trusts, and corporations, he oversees the Qualified Retirement Plan business of Sandhill, which consists of plans covering more than 3,000 employees in total. Chris is the President of the Financial Planning Counselors of Western New York and serves on the school board of St. Gregory the Great School. He has coached youth sports in Clarence and at St. Gregory the Great School for a number of years. Chris resides in Clarence Center with his wife, Laura, and four children, Carter, Owen, Hudson, and Sawyer.

Tina Hassler

Partner, Investment Advisor

Tina received her Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of Connecticut in 2007. Following graduation, Tina worked for Tradewind Aviation as Director of Charter and oversaw charter sales, aircraft dispatch, and client service. She left the aviation industry to pursue a career in finance and began working at Gleacher Fund Advisors, a mid-size fund-of-hedge funds in 2008. At GFA, Tina was responsible for investor relations and investment operations while also supporting the COO during an orderly wind-down of the firm’s funds.

After moving back to Buffalo, Tina worked for Citigroup, monitoring credit exposure to hedge fund counterparties for Citi’s Institutional Clients Group. Tina joined Sandhill in 2013 and was named Partner in 2016. In 2021, she was promoted from the firm's Director of Client Service to Investment Advisor.

Tina lives on Grand Island with her husband, Jeff, and three children.

Richard W. Ryskalczyk, CFA

Partner, Chief Equity Analyst

Rick received his B.S. in Economics and Finance from Canisius College in 2010. He graduated summa cum laude and received the Nelson D. Civello Award as the "Most Outstanding Graduate" in the Economics and Finance department.

After joining Sandhill in 2010, Rick earned his Charted Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2013.

Today, Rick serves as Treasurer of the CFA Society of Buffalo. In addition, he is a mentor to students in the Golden Griffin Fund, a student-run investment portfolio at Canisius and a program that he graduated from. He is also a mentor for Say Yes Buffalo, a program that supports inner-city economic development by providing grants to students to help cover the cost of their college education.

Mark Larry, CFA

Partner, Senior Equity Analyst

Mark earned a B.B.A. Finance in 2009 and an MBA in 2010—both from St. Bonaventure University. While at St. Bonaventure, Mark led the University’s student-run investment fund known as the “Students In Money Management” (SIMM). From 2010 to 2013, Mark worked for Citigroup Inc., in two different roles supporting sales and trading across various product lines within FIRM’s Institutional Clients Group.

Mark joined Sandhill as an Equity Research Analyst in 2013 and earned his CFA Charter in 2014. He was named Partner and promoted to Senior Equity Analyst in December 2017.

Ryan Myers

Partner, Chief Compliance Officer

Ryan earned his B.S. in Finance from Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri. After starting his career in the medical device industry, Ryan entered the financial services industry in 2013 after accepting a position with Merrill Lynch. He later moved to M&T Securities, where he was the Supervisory Principal overseeing four M&T Securities offices in Western New York.

Ryan joined Sandhill as the firm's Chief Compliance Officer in March 2016. He was elevated to Partner in 2021.

Aaron VandeGuchte, CFA

Partner, Equity Analyst

Aaron earned his B.S. in Finance from Grand Valley State University. During college, Aaron served as Equity Analyst for the Seidman College of Business' student-run investment portfolio and worked as a Financial Analyst at Eenhoorn LLC, a multi-family real estate company.

Aaron joined the Sandhill team as an Assistant Equity Analyst in May 2017 and was named Partner in 2021. He successfully earned his CFA designation in 2021.

Aaron and his wife, Jessica, relocated to Buffalo from Michigan and enjoy spending their free time with their three children.

Thomas Baker

Investment Advisor

Tom earned his B.S. in Finance from Michigan State University. Tom works with individuals, families, and institutional clients to develop customized investment plans that meet their unique needs.

Tom joined Sandhill in August 2016. Prior to joining Sandhill, he was a Senior Vice President and Wealth Advisor for Key Private Bank in Buffalo. Tom returned to Buffalo in 2011 after spending 10 years at State Street Global Advisors in Boston, Massachusetts. He has over 20 years of experience in the investment management industry.

Tom currently serves as a Director on the OLV Homes of Charity Board. He resides in Orchard Park with his wife, Myrna, and their two daughters.

Brian Dillon, AIFA®, ChFC

Investment Advisor
Retirement Plan Fiduciary

Brian was raised in Buffalo and graduated from Nichols School in 1976. After receiving his B.A. from Syracuse University, Brian began his career in financial services with New York Life Insurance Company in Portland, Maine, in 1983. It was here where he earned the designations of Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant before becoming a Regional Vice President for NYLIFE Securities. He returned to Buffalo in 1992 to join Fleet Investment Services as a Vice President of Institutional Investments. Brian moved to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1997 to take a position as Regional Vice President with MFS Retirement Services, the 401(k) division of MFS Investment Management. In 2009, he founded Positive Retirement Outcomes, LLC, which provides fiduciary and investment advisory services to employers with 401(k) plans. He obtained the Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst® designation in 2010.

Brian joined Sandhill in 2019 and continues working with retirement plans in addition to helping individuals, families, and foundations prudently manage their critical long term liquid assets.

Brian and his wife live near Boston close to their two married children and grandson. He has served on numerous not-for-profit boards in the fields of education, healthcare, and conservation. Brian currently serves on the Emeritus Board of Ducks Unlimited, Inc., which preserves and protects more than 14 million acres of wetland habitat across North America.

Stephen K. Garvin

Investment Advisor

Steve earned his B.A. from Hamilton College before completing the Executive Securities Program at the Securities Industry Institute at Wharton. Steve has nearly 30 years of investment industry experience that began with his post as Account Executive at Eppler, Guerin & Turner in Dallas, TX. Steve also spent time at both Prudential-Bache Securities and Shearson Lehman Brothers until he ultimately accepted a Managing Broker position with Southwest Securities.

Steve returned to Buffalo in 2002 from the greater Dallas area and was a Sandhill client for four years before signing on as the firm's Vice President of Business Development in March 2013.

Steve remains active in the local community by volunteering with his church and co-chairing the Major Gifts campaign for Forever St. Francis. In addition, he serves on the boards of Athletes in Action, Frank Reich Call to Courage, and the Joshua Group. Steve is married to wife, Tamara, and has three grown sons.

Trisha Allsop

Director of Client Service

Trisha graduated magna cum laude from University at Buffalo with a B.S. in Business Administration and a concentration in Finance. Before joining Sandhill, Trisha worked as a Data Analyst at HSBC.

Trisha became part of the Sandhill team in 2016 after accepting the position of Operations Associate. In 2020, Trisha became a Senior Client Service Associate at Sandhill, and in 2021, she was promoted to her current role as the firm's Director of Client Service.

Paul Stancs

Director

Paul earned his B.A. in Economics from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. Paul spent the first 13 years of his career as a currency trader specialist at various banks in New York City. He also worked as a broker dealer at Oppenheimer in Stamford, CT. For the past 9 years, Paul has served the investment community as a registered Investment Adviser Representative and fiduciary for Fisher Investments Private Client Group.

Paul brings a vast amount of experience structuring individual investment portfolios to fit the investment objectives of the unique clients he serves in the high-net-worth arena. Paul is a 20-year resident of Litchfield, Connecticut, and has two children. He enjoys coaching youth hockey and playing a competitive golf schedule.

David Dennett

Business Development

Dave earned his B.A. from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY and soon after began his career in finance with NatWest Investor Services. He continued his career with multiple firms in New York and Boston.

Dave joined Sandhill in August 2021 and brings over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry, markets, and client suitability. He is passionate about working with individuals, families, and institutions by helping them reach their specific financial goals and objectives.

Dave resides in Saratoga Springs, NY with his wife, Beth, and their five children. He is an avid golfer who also likes to spend time in the vast Adirondack park boating, camping, and hiking.

Amanda Theriot

Business Administrator

Amanda earned her B.S. in Human Resource Management, graduating with honors from Limestone University in 2015. Prior to earning her degree, Amanda enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2007 and served as an IT Specialist stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington until 2010.

Following her service, Amanda spent five years in office management in Florence, SC before relocating to Buffalo, where she became a financial controller for Sodexo's government and healthcare division, servicing contracts in both Buffalo and New England. In 2018, she was awarded “Unit Controller of the Year”.

Amanda now resides in West Seneca with her daughter, Sophia. She joined Sandhill in September 2021 as part of the Operations team. In her current role, she works closely with the Chief Operating Officer in managing the firm's human resources and administrative expenses.

Christian Martinez, CFP®

Advisor Associate

Christian was born and raised in Buffalo, NY and graduated from Canisius High School in 2009. He earned a B.S. in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing from Buffalo State College. Christian is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and has been a member of the Sandhill team for over three years. He is passionate about creating a one-of-a-kind experience for his clients.

Active in the Western New York community, Christian currently serves on the Albright-Knox Art Gallery's Convergence Council, is a member of the BISON Children's Scholarship Fund's President's Council, and sits on the Alumni Board of Governors at Canisius High School.

Christian resides in the Elmwood Village with his wife, Leigh.

Jenny Ly

Operations Associate

Jenny graduated from the University at Buffalo with a B.S. in Business Administration and a concentration in both Finance and Management Information Systems. She most recently worked as a Manager at local Pet Resort.

Jenny joined the Sandhill team as Operations Associate in January 2019.

Ariel Bauerlein

Client Service Associate

Ariel graduated in 2013 from Buffalo State College with a B.A. in Music. She most recently worked as a Relationship Banker at Citizens Bank.

Ariel joined the Sandhill team as a Client Service Associate in March 2020.

Eric Hanfland

Assistant Equity Analyst

Hailing from Rochester, Eric graduated summa cum laude from the University at Buffalo in 2020, earning a B.S. in Finance. While on campus, Eric served as the CIO of the school's student-run Terese Kelly Investment Group, where he managed and oversaw a fund of nearly $500,000.

Eric joined the Sandhill team as an Assistant Equity Analyst in June 2020. He is an avid golfer and looks forward to living in downtown Buffalo.

Max Wojtczak

Operations Associate

A Buffalo native, Max graduated from the University at Buffalo with a B.S. in Computer Science. He most recently worked at the university as a Network Technician.

Max joined the Sandhill team as Operations Associate in June 2020.

Julianna Kraft

Client Service Assistant

Julianna graduated summa cum laude from SUNY Buffalo State College in 2021 with a B.S. in Hospitality Administration. Prior to joining the Sandhill team, Julianna worked at The Mansion on Delaware Avenue as a Front Desk Supervisor specializing in luxury guest service. She also served as the personal assistant for the lead actress in the movie, "Cabrini," that was filmed in Buffalo in 2021.

Julianna joined Sandhill as a Client Service Assistant in October 2021.

Patrick J. Collins

Advisor Associate

A lifelong native of Western New York, Pat graduated from Canisius High School in 2016. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Canisius College in 2019, graduating summa cum laude as a member of the school’s Wehle School of Business and All-College Honors Program.

Pat joined Sandhill in April 2022 as an Advisor Associate with The Advocate Team and is currently working toward his CFP® certification. Prior to Sandhill, Pat began his professional career as a Leadership Development Trainee at Aleron, Buffalo’s largest talent acquisition and business solutions company.

Outside of Sandhill, Pat currently serves on the Alumni Board of Governors at Canisius High School and has participated in fundraising efforts to benefit cystic fibrosis research through the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's annual Rising Stars Program.
